How to set up digital signage on Android TV

You do not need a technician or new hardware. Here is how to go from an empty account to a playing screen.

Before you start

What you need

  • An Android TV, or any TV with an Android media box plugged in
  • A SignaOrbit account (30 days free, up to 5 screens, no credit card)
  • Content as JPG or PNG images or MP4 videos, up to 500 MB per file

Steps

Set up in four steps

  1. 1

    Install the player

Put the SignaOrbit player on the Android TV or media box and open it. It shows a screen waiting to be paired.

  2. 2

    Pair the screen

In your dashboard, add a screen. You get a 6-character code. Type it into the TV with its remote and the screen appears in your account.

  3. 3

    Upload and build a playlist

Upload files to your media library, organised in folders. Arrange them into a playlist, set how long each slide plays and preview it. Use a layout to split the screen into zones.

  4. 4

    Publish

Send the playlist to the screen. It downloads the content, plays it and keeps playing, even when the connection drops.

After it is live

Next things to try

Add a schedule so playlists change by time of day, and group screens so you can publish to several at once. Read how to schedule content on signage screens, or see Android TV digital signage for platform details.

Tip: after pairing, check the screen's status in the dashboard. You can see whether it is online, when it last answered and what it is playing.

FAQ

Common questions

Do I need special hardware?

No. Any Android TV, or a TV with an Android media box, works.

How long does setup take?

Most teams have content playing on their first TV within the hour.

What happens if the internet goes down?

The screen keeps playing. Content is stored on the device and schedules run locally, so a lost connection only means the screen shows as offline in your dashboard until it reconnects.
